    How to have faith

This is a subject that I believe everyone can relate to, how to have faith? We live in an interesting time in history. The world can be a great place or a very harsh place depending on how you view it all. Yet we are all living and breathing the same air however our realities may be worlds apart. I recall as a child seeing advertisements for UNICEF that showed people in Africa starving and needing help. I looked at the images of flies all over the people's faces and how they looked. I think I was about 7 or 8 at the time and these images have never left me. As a young person, I really didn't know what to make of all of these things I was fortunate enough to have food and water and a warm place to live. As I think now, I should have been beyond grateful for all of it. The reality of everything is often different we deal with the things we experience in many different ways. Sometimes we deal with raw emotions that ebb and flow like the coming of the tides. At other times very little could bother us it is a mixed bag of feelings and emotions that actually control us all. Our environments and other influences shape our perceived reality, and our emotions do the rest. So why is it that people can believe in something they can't touch, see, or feel but know to be real? What is it about this extraordinary situation that has led to more fortunes, success, and even survival than anything known to exist? What is faith, why do we know about it and how can we use it in the darkest of times to survive and thrive.

So, we begin with the definition of faith- complete trust in someone or something. That is very intriguing but other definitions have to do with spiritual teachings. The definition of faith in the spiritual context is a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of religion, based on spiritual apprehensions rather than proof. So, this could explain why people can believe in something and have no evidence of it being real. Is there power in what we choose to believe and if so, what gives it power?  If you want to check out this blog right now, I don't blame you because it is about to get real in this post. I have lived all over the US by virtue of my jobs at the time, when I moved to Houston Texas, I was asked the same question over and over. The question was" do I believe in God?" Now I can tell you this question and its answer will not be the basis of this blog, but it does pertain to the subject of faith. As I looked at whom asked me the pre-stated question, I was also questioning them in my mind. I can tell you I am a pretty straightforward type of person so if I'm thinking it, I say it, (lost a lot of jobs that way...lol). I wondered about these men who would constantly ask me this question, they had very little income and some didn't have a home. However, all of that came to be beyond me at the time but the good folks in Houston often felt that I needed to know their stories, and I would listen. Many of these men had been through the system of incarceration, and some had spent most of their lives there. I was a new face younger than these men, so I got the memo I looked out of place. They assumed that we had a bond maybe we did often we didn't. They thought I knew about what they had been through perhaps experiencing this myself. I had my run-ins with the law, but I never did the things that would land me in prison thank goodness. So, I was fascinated by their stories and how they sized me up based on their experiences. For the most part, they accepted me but we both knew I wasn't like them, and not for the reasons you may be thinking. With all of the unfortunate situations and foul treatment these men had received in their lifetime one thing remained true, it was their faith. It was this one thing that made me different from these gentlemen's faith. All the times I had been asked do I believe in God, they really wanted to know do I have faith. I told them that I was not a bible thumper, but I believed in a higher power. The more I spoke to these men the more they wanted to hear my views on all sorts of subjects. Some things they didn't understand about a society made it hard for them to fit in, I explained things slowly many times to help them with this and they began to trust me. I began to understand that these men had a world that really didn't care for them, but they had faith. On occasion, people from various organizations would have bible study and feed the men. These simple gestures of kindness and understanding look like little thing but it means a lot, these men may have thought society had forgotten about them but by faith, they realized that was not true.

Why do we know about faith? If I had to guess it may come from a part of the human psyche that gives us hope. How many people would absolutely give up on life for all sorts of reasons if they didn't have hope? The truth of things is that every day we face 1000 ways to die, lol. I kid I was just checking to see if you are paying attention. However, that statement is absolutely true, it is a miracle we make past 5 years old. Life can be fulfilling, or it can be cruel, but we all have within us the power to improve how our life is going to go. By using absolute faith in something the odds of it being true for us to go up. The ability to affect any circumstance we may find ourselves in can be attributed to faith and having hope that things can change. Some call this blind faith the ability to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that something that cannot be proven can and is absolutely true.

Can you change your current circumstance by having faith? Absolutely you can and a great example of this is the Pacman Manny Pacquiao he is the only eight-division world champion in history. His estimated net worth is 375 million dollars he is the 3rd richest boxer in the world. He stands 5'6 tall and weighs about 130 lbs. He comes from the Philippines not only has he beat some of the best boxers in various weight classes he also beat extreme poverty and broken home life. Manny had to drop out of high school because the family could not afford it. He was inspired by the bout between Buster Douglas and Iron Mike Tyson, Douglas won as a huge underdog. This captivated Manny and he began training. So, a young man from a poor country that had to drop out of school became one of the richest boxers in history how did he do it? The answer is he had faith that he could do it even though he had no evidence that it would be possible.

Many people have overcome some very hard situations that if they didn't have hope or faith may have had a different outcome. Everyday life has obstacles that we must overcome. The way we do this is by having hope that we make the correct choices and having faith that everything will work. This simple word can literally change the trajectory of your life. It can heal the sick and comfort the elderly. It can bring families who have been separated together again. If you have been beaten down in life faith can make you whole again.
